Have you ever noticed your child struggling to express themselves, even if they know the words? Or perhaps they have difficulty pronouncing sounds clearly? The key to understanding these challenges lies in recognizing the difference between speech and language.
In Series 1, Episode 1 of Speech Glam Talks, breaks down what speech and language truly mean, and why both are essential for effective communication.
What is Speech?
Speech is how we produce sounds. It involves:
• Articulation – How we form sounds with our lips, tongue, and teeth (e.g., saying “rabbit” vs. “wabbit”).
• Voice – The use of vocal cords and breath to produce sound.
• Fluency – The rhythm and flow of speech, free from interruptions like stuttering.
Think of speech as the sound of communication.
What is Language?
Language, on the other hand, is how we understand and use words to communicate ideas. It involves:”
• Receptive Language – Understanding what others say.
• Expressive Language – Using words to share thoughts and ideas.
• Pragmatics – Knowing how to use language in social settings (e.g., taking turns in conversation).
Language is the meaning behind communication.
Why Does This Matter?
Understanding the difference between speech and language helps parents, teachers, and therapists provide the right kind of support for children. A child might:
• Struggle to say certain sounds (speech issue)
• Have difficulty forming sentences or following directions (language issue)
Knowing the difference ensures they get the right intervention at the right time.
